Valentine’s Day Cookies Recipe

My Valentine’s Day cookie recipe is as easy as they come. If you have ever made rolled sugar cookies before, then you will already be a pro. First, you make the simple cookie dough and let it chill. Then, you roll it out and use cute heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut the dough. I like to use a smaller cookie cutter that is about 2 inches big so that my Valentine’s cookies are bite-sized and easy to pop right into your mouth.

Bake the heart cookies and, once they have cooled, they are ready to be topped with jam and sandwiched together! I am telling you now that you will need to taste at least one or two of these cookies as soon as they are done. They are too adorable and too delicious to resist!

Put a few homemade Valentine’s cookies in cellophane bags, and give them out as gifts. Bring a tray to work, and show your co-workers that you care. Or, just make a whole batch of jelly-filled heart cookies for you and your sweetheart to enjoy alone after a romantic dinner. You can’t go wrong with these easy cookies for Valentine’s Day!

Ingredients for Valentine’s Day Cookies

See recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.

  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking Soda
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Butter – I always use unsalted butter to bake!
  • Vanilla
  • Whole milk – Make sure you use whole milk which has just the right amount of fat and creates a soft texture.
  • Berry jam – I like to use strawberry jam or raspberry jam to sandwich the cookies together. The pink color fits right into the Valentine’s Day theme!

Variations

  • Once the cookies are sandwiched together, dip them in melted chocolate chips, going halfway up the cookie. Place them on a clean baking tray lined with parchment paper, and let the chocolate harden. White chocolate, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate all taste great!
  • Use blueberry, grape, or even mixed berry jam to fill the cookies.
  • Replace the vanilla extract with almond extract for a tasty twist on a classic recipe.
  • Ice the cookies with royal icing before assembling them with the jelly. Write on the iced cookies with colored royal icing to make cute conversation heart cookies for Valentine’s Day.
  • Use Nutella, cream cheese frosting, or peanut butter to sandwich the cookies together for a new delicious treat.

How to Make Valentine’s Day Cookies

  1. Mix the dries: Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Make the cookie dough: Add the sugar, softened butter, vanilla, and milk to the dry ingredients. Knead everything together using your hands until the dough is smooth.
  3. Chill: Wrap the cookie dough in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350ºF, and line two baking trays with sheets of parchment paper.
  5. Roll and cut: Dust a work surface with flour. Then, use a rolling pin to roll the chilled dough until it is about 1/2 inch thick. Use cookie cutters to shape the dough into hearts, and place them on the prepared cookie tray.
  6. Bake: Bake the cookies for about 12 minutes. Then, let them cool on the baking for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Assemble: Spread a little jam on half of the cookies. Then, place the plain cookies on top of the jelly cookies, creating a sandwich. Enjoy!

Quick Tip

Make sure the cookies are completely cooled before adding the jam. If they are too hot, the jelly will melt and drip right off!

How to Store Valentine’s Day Cookies

Place the assembled cut-out cookies in an airtight container, and store them at room temperature for up to one week. For a longer-lasting option, store leftover cookies in the fridge for up to three weeks.

These cookies freeze well, too! Bake the cookies, and allow them to cool completely. Then, transfer them to a freezer-safe container, and freeze for up to three months. To serve, thaw the cookies at room temperature, add the jam, and enjoy!

FAQs

How do you cut heart-shaped cookies without a cookie cutter?

If you do not have a heart-shaped cookie cutter, draw a heart on a piece of plain white paper in the size that you would like. Cut out the paper heart with scissors. Then, place the heart on top of the rolled cookie dough. Use a pairing knife to gently cut around the paper heart templet and into the cookie dough. As long as you trace around your cut-out heart, your cookies will be uniform and gorgeous!

Can you freeze cookie dough?

Yes! You can freeze cookie dough. If you would like to make this cookie dough in advance and get a jump start on your Valentine’s Day baking, prepare the cookie dough according to the recipe instructions, and freeze it for up to three months. Let the cookie dough thaw in the fridge overnight. Then, roll it out and bake as directed in the recipe.

How to decorate Valentine’s Day cookies?

My Valentine’s Day heart cookies are sandwiched together with jelly, making them pretty without a crazy amount of decorating. You can flood the sugar cookies with colored royal icing, top them with sprinkles, or write lovey messages on the iced Valentine’s cookies if you want to decorate them even more!
