Kazuya Mishima was announced as a DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on June 15, 2021. The Tekken representative would later be released on June 29, 2021, labeled as Fighter #81.
He was the second last character to ever be released for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and was part of the Fighters Pass Vol. 2. As a video game icon, Kazuya made his debut appearance in the arcade version of Tekken on September 21, 1994 in Japan. Tekken would later see a worldwide release in December 1994.
For his default appearance, Kazuya is shirtless and covered in scars. His left eye typically glows red, hinting at the existence of the Devil Gene within him. Every even-numbered costume, however, has Kazuya dressed in different colored business attire.
Kazuya is a particularly unique fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as he is the only fighter with access to tilts that require diagonal directions. While most combatants only have three tilts, Kazuya gets eleven of them when counting every direction plus the three "crouching normals." That's still not even counting the rising Demon God Fist or the double forward Left Splits Kick attacks.
Similar to other DLC characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Kazuya is armed with unique mechanic that comes into play after one of his stocks sustains 100% damage. It's indicated that Kazuya's Rage mechanic is online once he glows red. While active, Kazuya's attack damage will be increased by 10% and he'll be able to trigger a Rage Drive with a grab, down special or Dragon Uppercut input. When used with the Dragon Uppercut input, the Rage Drive will see increased power.
Although not all of Kazuya's moves are used during a typical match, some of his attacks are said to be among the best in the game. His Electric Wind God Fist, for example, is one of his go-to moves as it can easily set up into a touch of death. Of course, the Electric Wind God Fist only has a two frame window in which the normal attack button and the down-forward direction must be inputted together.
Overall, Kazuya specializes in having an obscenely strong ground game, but is slower than the rest of the roster when it comes to getting airborne. While every other character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has a 3 frame jump squat, Kazuya has a 7 frame jump squat.
Current perceptions of Kazuya Mishima in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate paint him as a top tier contender thanks to the near unlimited ways to initiate a touch of death combo. With absolutely absurd damage output, opponents are forced to play extremely carefully against Kazuya. As such, there's even been discussions about potentially banning Kazuya, though his tournament placings do not yet depict him as winning enough to warrant this.
